Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Autumn! I think you may have to take my word for it though, considering the winter wonderland we have outside. Only in Central Oregon can we see 6 inches of snow on October 4th. But my calander says it's Autumn and calenders don't lie so that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
~~I hope you all had a wonderful and safe summer. It certainly went by way too fast! We had a few camping trips, a great visit from my parents as well as the usual summer fun. Now that school's back in session for Devan, I feel like I should do some homework too, hence the newsletter.
~~I love sharing information with you and this newsletter is going to be full of good stuff. I recently attended another continuing education seminar through YonKa Paris on the aging process and age-intervention treatments, procedures and products. I'm really jazzed about this class and the new "Advanced Optimizer Programme". ~~Hyperpigmentation and St. John's Wort: Do you take St. John's Wort for depression? Then you may be interested to know that this herbal suppliment can make you susceptible to hyperpigmentation, a discoloration of the skin. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by sun damamge, aging, scarring from injuries or inflamation. If you find that this applies to you, check with your doctor or naturalpath and see if there may be an alternative to St. John's Wort. Ladies who want their guy a little less furry, guys who just want smoother skin, athletes who want a edge with the sleekness of bare skin, etc. And you've all seen or at least heard of the chest waxing scene with Steve Carrell in the "40 Year Old Virgin". Well lots of guys do that and more on a very regular basis. MRSA bacteria, Clarisonic and more

Dear Clients,
Finally, pollen....uh.....I mean spring is in the air! Hopefully by the time I get all the winter clothes packed away, the cold weather and snow will also be gone for another year! If you have those wretched allergies like my poor friend Linda, my heart goes out to you. Remember to increase your water intake when using antihistamines and other allergy relief medications as these tend to have a diuretic effect. Also, it's important for allergy sufferers to boost your immune system. The MRSA Bacteria:

There' s been an emergence of a bacterium called methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that is spreading with alarming frequency, causing 94,000 life-threatening infections and nearly 19,000 deaths in 2005. While there are still antibiotics that treat MRSA, if it spreads to the blood, lungs or organs, they may not be enough. It used to be that MRSA was found mostly in hospitals and threatened mainly the weak and elderly, but as life forms do, it evolved into something more resistant to drugs. MRSA is primarily transmitted by skin-to-skin contact when an open sore is present. An infection may look like a pimple, boil, bump or bug bite. It's often red and swollen. If it looks infected it should be covered and seen by a doctor. MRSA often lives harmlessly on people's skin or in their noses and can be transmitted fairly readily to a nick or wound on the skin. CAREFUL HAND WASHING is one of the biggest ways to cut the risk of many kinds of infection. Skin care facilities, spas, health clubs and nail salons must be diligent in infection control. I want to reassure my clients that Bend Skin CO. complies with all OSHA specified infection control standards. These include using disposables whenever possible, the use of a registered U.S. EPA high-level disinfectant, washing all linens in 125 degree water with detergent and bleach and cleaning all surfaces after each client with an EPA recommended disinfectant. My 20+ years as a dental surgical assistant has ingrained in me the critical importance of infection control and I bring that to my skin care practice. Also, here's something for you to keep in mind when using your credit card. Marching Into Spring

Greetings, Dear Clients,

It's so hard to believe that the first day of spring, March 20, is just around the corner. Especially with the nippy weather we've been having! I do believe the Leprechaun will be wearing long underwear this St. Patrick's Day! I hope you and your families are staying warm and healthy!

I have lots of things to share with you! The first and probably biggest news is that Bend Skin CO. will be relocating. The move was prompted by a few things, first and foremost is our current economic craziness. I want to do as much as possible to keep my treatment fees at or below other skin care facilities while still providing better quality and quantity of service. Moving to this new location will allow me to retain my current fees. The new location will also be a safer facility for myself as well as my clients, since I have evening and Saturday hours. Bend Skin CO. will now be located at Touchmark @Mt. Bachelor Village in the "Cliff Lodge". This is a really convenient location, adjacent to the Athletic Club of Bend. From Rt. 97, take the Reed Market exit and go west. At the forth traffic circle, go 3/4 around and head up the hill towards Mt. Bachelor Village. Make a left through the black iron gates, then an immediate left. The road will split and you'll go to the right and down a hill. The Cliff Lodge will be on the left and there will parking marked for Bend Skin CO. I will only be renting my space in Touchmark, not employed by Touchmark. Bend Skin CO. is and will remain open to the public. I will be sharing my 'suite' with a very dear and 'sweet' friend of mine, Kathi Cullen, one of the most incredible massage therapists in Central Oregon. You'll want to take advantage of the convenience this will offer you by booking both your skin care treatments and massage for the same day! I'll be reminding you of the new address when you make your next appointment. I know you'll find this facility as beautiful as I do!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I wish you all great hope, good health and fabulous skin for 2009! I also want to thank you for making Bend Skin CO. your choice for skin care. In our less than perfect economic environment, I truly appreciate your continued loyality.

Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan have them. Nicole Kidman prefers the J-curl while Eva Longoria likes the C-Curl. J.Lo's are made of mink. **SILICA**
Trace minerals have an important role in healthy skin, specifically in the strengthening and repair of collagen which is the most abundant protein in your body and gives structure to the skin. Silica is a trace mineral responsible for strengthening bone, hair and muscle and is fundamental for healthy skin. A deficiancy in Silica may result in poor wound healing and reduced skin elasticity. And as we age our natural silica becomes depleted. This is why our skin begins to lack luster and exhibit premature aging in the form of increased wrinkling. Studies have shown that supplementing silica improves hair, nails and skin. One study reported a significant increase in the skin's thickness and appearance and a decrease in wrinkles with silica suppliments. The same study showed an improvement in minor skin problems like blackheads and whiteheads. Since silica is a water-soluable mineral, it doesn't accumulate in the body so there's no risk of building up too much in your system. When an appointment time is reserved for you and you don't keep it, it has a tremendous financial impact. So that is why as of January 1, 2009, I am implimenting a 24-hour cancellation notice. If an appointment is missed without a 24 notice, you may be charged for that appointment. Believe me when I tell you I understand that sometimes changing an appoinment can't be avoided. Sickness, inclement weather are certainly understandable. I, myself, have had to reschedule appointments. But as a courtesy, a 24 hour notice helps to fill that time or condense my schedule. "No Show's" are the most difficult since there is no way to recover that time or the expense if I've arranged for child care for my son. I really appreciate your consideration in this.

I am wishing you all a most festive Autumn! There's a nip in the air and the smell of falling leaves. Not as vibrantly strong or colorful as it is on the eastcoast, where I'm from (GO STEELERS!), but still quite lovely.

I apologize that it's been so long since the last newsletter. It's always harder to motivate myself to sit at a computer when I could be playing outside! But it's long overdue so let's begin! First of all I want to welcome the many new clients that have joined Bend Skin CO. So let's talk about some skin care tips for autumn. Taking a walk through Shevlin Park or hiking around Paulina Lake this time of year is such a great experience, but there's nothing picturesque about chapped lips or wind-burned skin. It's even more important to care for your skin during the change of seasons, when the varying weather conditions and changing temperatures sneak in and damage your skin before you've adjusted your skin care routine. Ladies, did you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Please remember to schedule your mammogram if it's been a year or more since your last exam. I'm stressing the importance of this from 2 experiences. This past June, one of my dearest clients was diagnosed with breast cancer through mammography. It resulted in an extremely frightening and painful experience for her (and her family) and ended with a double mastectomy. I am overjoyed to tell you that she is doing beautifully and I am totally in awe of her strength. Personally, I recently went through the scare of a questionable mammogram and biopsy. The good news is, no cancer. (YEEHAW!) However, without early detection these cells could have become cancerous. So please take this seriously and take care of youself. And to all of my male clients, make sure the women you love, Wife, Girlfriend, Mom, Sister, etc. are getting regular mammograms. Be discreet! You don't neccessarily want to discuss it at Mom's house during Sunday dinner. But the fact that you care enough to ask will let her know how much she means to you.

Are you tired of your boring old bikini or brazilian wax? Why not show your playful side and try one of the new "Beekini" shapers? These are actually stencils that are used to create shapes! I have the star, arrow, butterfly, lips, heart or lightening bolt. It won't make the waxing itself anymore enjoyable, but the end result is kind of cool!

The initial visit takes approximately 2 hours, depending on how much we're adding. The follow up appointments take about 45-60 minutes for "fills".

I'm reminded of that disco song from the early 80's by the WeatherGirls to begin this newsletter. And yes, I was a fairly decent disco queen in those days, in case you were wondering. Now that you have that little visual, let's get down to the business of skin, shall we?

So here we are moving towards spring. And it's not too early to start thinking about Mother's Day. This year it is Sunday, May 11. Did you know that Mother's Day--or a version of it-- is celebrated, on different days throughout the year, by 133 countries around the world? 61 countries celebrate the holiday on the same day as the United States. Mother's Day in the U.S.A. is modeled loosely on a similar holiday in Britain. However, when it was imported by social activist Julia Ward Howe, after the Civil War, it was intended as a call to unite women against the war. Some of the early Mother's Day activities were meetings of mother's whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the Civil War. In 1870, Ms. Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament, but she failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a 'Mother's Day for Peace'. In 1905, a woman named Anna Marie Jarvis began to devote her life to establishing Mother's Day as a national and international holiday in honor of her own mother. So thanks Julia and Anna Marie! You're my kind of gals! And here's somthing interesting. In 2007, consumers spent an average of $140 each on Mother's Day. That adds up to almost $16 billion in total. And the amount spent for personal services, such as trips to the Spa? Almost $3 billion! So, in case you weren't reading between the lines.....come in and pick up a gift certificate or some luscious skin care products for your Mom! If my own queen, Mrs. Norma Taylor didn't live in Arkansas, she'd be getting weekly facials! And then come Father's Day, don't forget the new Men's Skin Care line. And now a word or two about waxing. I'm seeing more and more clients, women as well as men, for whom waxing is simply a must-do part of their lives. But I can't stress strongly enough that proper home care after waxing is essential. Here are the three steps you need to do for the best results when waxing areas that are prone to ingrown hairs:
1. Immediately after waxing we need to diminish redness and irritation. I use YonKa's Creme 11 in-spa and encourage you to purchase this product for home use. A second choice is a pure aloe vera-based product.
2. Manually exfoliate the area daily in the shower. Besides lifting off dead skin cells, it loosens the hair follicle, preventing ingrowns and helping to alleviate the discomfort of waxing the next time around.
3. Once a day, apply a bump-preventing product that cools and heals. I carry a product called "Get the Bump Outta Here" which many clients love. What we're trying to accomplish is just one more way to exfoliate the skin between waxes.
The areas most prone to ingrowns are bikini, brazilian, underarms and backs.
4. Scheduling your appointments every 3-4 weeks depending on your hair growth rate is a must. It's very important for the hair folicle itself for waxing to occur when the hair is a little less than 1/4 inch. Waxing longer hair can be more traumatic on the skin.

Happy Autumn! I hope your summer was wonderful, fun and memorable! Mine certainly was! As I mentioned in my summer newsletter, my fantabulously romantic husband, Eric, raised the bar on 50th birthday gifts by taking me to Europe for the month of August. We spent time in Tuscany, Florence and the Italian Riviera before flying to Barcelona, Spain to set off on a 2 week Mediterranean Cruise that included Nice, France; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Corfu, Greece and Rome, Venice and Naples. The surprises just kept coming thanks to Therese and Michael, Susan and Scott and cousins Tracy and Dale who joined us for parts of the vacation. Extravagant??? Yes! Am I worth it? Eric says he won't be doing anything so outrageous for my 100th, but since he has another 50 years to plan and save $, I think he should at least try! Pumpkin is rich in enzymes and antioxidents that are similar to a gentle alpha-hydroxy. It's loaded with Betacarotine and Vitamin E, 2 very important agents in age-intervention. And cinnamon is gently stimulating and antibacterial. Here's the recipe for a delectible scrub:

1/2 cup cooked or canned pumpkin, pureed
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon pumpkin seed oil*
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* sunflower or olive oil can be substituted

1. mix ingredients in a bowl
2. Stand in a tub or shower stall and use a damp washcloth to scoop up some of the mixture.
Apply to your body, starting with your feet and working your way up, but avoiding your face.
Scrub gently using a circular motion
3. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
This scrub smells divine and makes the skin feel smooth as silk!

~~~~~~~~~~~~PEELS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Everyone from Oprah to Jennifer Aniston talks about PEELS. And you probably say, "Oh! Note to self, call Debra to schedule a peel." And that would make you one smart cookie! So here's the scoop on peels. Simply put, they are a means of retexturizing the skin by chemically disolving dead skin cells, reaching into the epidermis and inflaming the skin to produce collagen. Peels are effective in treating hyperpigmentation, fine wrinkles and acne scarring. Peels are the "Controlled Burn" of skin care treatments because an acid is used. Now, we aren't talking battery acid. I don't want you to get a vision of sizzling skin! There are 3 types; superficial, medium and deep. DEEP PEELS are done by a licensed physician, under sedation, attached to a cardiac monitor. The ideal patient is one with severe sun damage. The skin is raw for 2-3 weeks but dramatic improvement will be accomplished. MEDIUM PEELS are great for softening deep lines and erasing brown spots. The first 10 days after a medium peel the skin transforms from slightly pink to dark to peeling like having a fairly significant sunburn. SUPERFICIAL PEELS can benefit everyone because it removes the most stubborn dead skin cells to yield skin that is smoother and more evenly pigmented. Clients with minimal imperfections or acne will benefit greatly and the recovery time is similar to what you would expect after a mild sunburn. The difference between the superficial and medium peels is the concentration of the glycolic, lactic, salicylic or trichloroacetic acids. Deep peels are usually done with phenol. In most facials that I do, a micro(VERY superficial)-peel is integrated into the treatment. I have two other specific peel treatments. The first is the "Alpha-Vital" facial which is done in a series of 3-4 treatments. It incorporates organically sourced alpha and beta hydroxies from fruit and plant acids with an algae, green tea and fruit based mask. The second is done with a 3% lactic acid and also incorporates the algae mask. Please know that if you are serious about having a peel and truly resurfacing your skin, you must be willing to commit to a series of treatments and use the correct products for your home skin care regiment. I am trained and licensed in both superficial and medium peels and will be happy to address your specific needs at your next appointment.

Summer News

Dear Clients,

Well it doesn't seem possible but summer is almost over! I hope you've all stayed cool with the scorching days we've had this July. And I KNOW you've all been diligent about wearing sunscreen, right? We'll talk more about that later in the news letter. Lots of things are happening so let's get right to it, shall we?

*: I have found my new space and I'm very excited for you to see it! I am now sharing a lovely cottage at 235 SE Davis Avenue with one of Central Oregon's most well respected Acupuncturists, Wendy Daniels, L.Ac., MTCM. Wendy is fabulous and I look forward to having you meet her sometime when you're in. Her practice is called Ancient Traditions. It's a very convenient location. Just take 3rd St. south. Cross over Franklin, go under the train trestle and take the first right after the underpass. The cottage is burnt orange and has a few Chinese lanterns on the porch and is the second on the left. Or if you're coming from the Parkway, take the Colorado St. exit, turn left onto Colorado, go over the train tracks and it's the second left, third house on the right. My phone number will remain 541-390-3338. I'll be sending out announcements with a map and I'm planning an Open House sometime this fall. So, those of you who thought your next treatment was going to be on a bench in Drake Park, well, sorry to disappoint you. However, I promise you'll love the new space and we won't be disturbing the geese!

**: Most of you know that this past July 9th I turned 50. I know, I know, it IS hard to believe that I've been around a half a century! Fortunately I don't feel a day over 49! Having a 9 year old helps keep me young! Anyway, Eric, my wonderful husband, has outdone himself with my birthday gift and is taking me to Italy for the month of August. I tell you this not just to brag about my thoughtful and romantic 'spice', but to let you know that I will not be seeing any clients in August. Attention Waxing Clients!

"No Scream Cream". Need I say more? This topical anesthetic cream can really take the OUCH out of Brazillian, Bikini and Underarm waxing as well as other areas. I have used it myself and am pleased with the results, as are a few clients who have also tried it. * >WINTERIZE YOUR SKIN< *

This is the time of year when your skin really starts to feel neglected. And it will let you know in many subtle ways like itching, cracking, flaking and chapping. You don't need to go through the winter season trying to stay comfortable in your own skin! So I've put together a survival guide that should help.
Winter is harshest on your skin because of the extreme cold, wind and dry air inside and outside. The cold temperatures deplete the skin's lipid layer which is responsible for maintaining hydration. Dry air and wind drain your skin of the moisture it's trying so hard to hold onto. Our first instincts are usually hot baths and slathering ourselves with something like whale blubber. NO!NO!NO! First, water heated significantly higher than body temperature actually dries out the skin. And buttering yourself like a piece of toast with products containing lanolin, mineral oil and even petroleum jelly may form a barrier between you and the elements but will clog pores. Skin in general and hands and lips in particular need extra TLC from now until the daffodils bloom.

1. =Exfoliation= Don't forget this step in your skin care regimen! If dead skin cells collect on the surface, toxins and perspiration can't be eliminated. (ICK!)
Also if you have a lot of dead skin build-up, facial treatments and moisturizers can't penetrate effectively. But don't use a scrub with abrasive particles that can cause micro-tears in the skin. Products like 'Yon Ka's' Gommage 303 & 305 are gentle enough to use every day because they contain citrus extracts and white nettle which loosen and disolve dead skin cells. Your skin then feels polished and not scoured like like an old skillet.
2. =Boosters= Professional boosters and serums penetrate deeply into the skin. They contain glycolipids to retain and bind moisture and hyaluronic acid which holds up to 1000 times it's own weight in moisture. 'Yon Ka' serum is rich and vitamin-supercharged. Dermal 1,2&3 serums hydrate and boost. These products can be used alone or added to any moisturizer. Also in the winter, apply your moisturizer more frequently.
3. =Seal it!= Paraffin masks on the face, hands or any other body part will make even the grumpiest skin cell rejoice. It's large molecular size prevents the paraffin from penetrating the skin and simply seals in products and prevents oxygenation that evaporates the products. The heat from the paraffin improves circulation and will make your skin feel like it's wrapped in a snuggly warm blanket.
4. ='Silence of the Lambs"= Did you ever have a sweater that you loved but hated to wear because it felt scratchy? It was probably wool which contains lanolin. Lanolin is a great weather-proofer for sheep, but highly allergic to many people. Better to wear things made of acrylic fiber or cashmere.
5. =Not for Skiiers Only= Winter sun may look and feel feeble but that's what Frosty the Snowman thought and look what happened to him! You still need SPF protection. Your eye area is most vulnerable so pay extra attention there.
'Yon Ka' has 4 different SPF products as well as an after-sun hydration lotion. Did you know that the sun's reflective powers are 17% on the sand but 80% on the snow?
6. =Humidity is our Friend= You don't have to re-create the rain forests of Costa Rica but investing in a home vaporizer for the bedroom and office makes a huge difference in how your body survives winter. Mucus membranes and nasal passages get crispy from breathing super dry air. Even a small indoor fountain will introduce moisture into the air. And the sound of water will calm and soothe the spirit as well.
9. =HYDRATE= Stay away from water-based moisturizers which can actually freeze on the skin. 'Yon Ka's' "LeBaum" which literally melts into the skin, shields against the environment and will soothe and repair the lipid barrier. Products containing Shea Butter keep skin supple.
10. ="How Dry I Am"= Alcohol is bad news both inside and out. Applied topically, it's extremely drying. And the holidays are the season for eggnog and champagne, but remember that cocktails deplete the skin's moisture. Ditto for that"wake-me-up/how much did I drink last night?" morning after coffee which is a diuretic. Skin must be moisturized from the inside out so DRINK YOUR WATER! A great way to stay on tract with moisture during the day is to mist yourself (like a Boston Fern) with light, non-aerosol spritzers like 'Yon Ka' Lotions PS and PG.
11. =KISS*KISS= Don't forget the kissers! Lips produce no protective sebum like other skin. Because they're regularly exposed to the elements they are particularly hard hit by winter weather. But like other skin, lips need to be exfoliated as well as moisturized. You can do this by just rubbing your lips with a soft cloth or brush. You can use a mild cleanser, vasoline or lemon juice. Apply lip balm immediately after. Mistletoe is not meant for parched, prune-like puckers.
12. =TO THE SPA!= A sure way to maintain beautiful skin this winter is to have regular facial treatments. The concentrated attention your skin receives is one of the most nurturing and healthiest things you can do. This also lets us work together to decide on the right products and homecare to keep your skin hydrated and soft throughout the season.

It's that time of the year. You know what I mean; back to school, store the deck furniture, rake the leaves, plant some mums and exfoliate the summer skin. OOPS! Did you forget that last one? Well it's not too late and the mums can wait!

At the beginning of each new season it's important to devote a little extra 'TLC' to your skin. Now's the time to rid your skin of the last vestages of the prior season and prepare it for the new one. This can be done most effectively with Yon Ka's "Alpha Vital" Facial, a skin resurfacing treatment using aha and bha from fruit and plant extracts. Some dead skin cells just hang on too long to your skin's surface and are greatly responsible for signs of premature aging. They also give the skin a dull, tired appearance.
